About Us

What is Tae Kwon-Do?
Tae Kwon-do literally means 'way' or 'art' of 'hand and foot'. 'Tae' means to smash, kick or destroy with the foot. 'Kwon' means to smash or destroy with the hand. 'Do' means way or art.

Tae Kwon-do is a scientifically based Korean Martial Art, which teaches using your body as a human weapon with offensive and defensive techniques. It is still used today by the South Korean Military!

Tae Kwon-do is a practical and efficient form of self defence that will provide you with the techniques and ability to defend yourself and your loved ones in today's unpredictable world. It will bestow you with confidence and a proactive mentality in your daily life, and outfit you with an all-round level of fitness and strength.

Who are the instructors?

Stephen Martinez, V Degree

"My first experience of Martial Arts was at the age of 9 when I began to train in Judo, winning Silver and then Gold in consecutive London Open Championships. Unfortunately the class closed down and I was unable to find another Art that suited me. I tried Karate, but the teachers refused to explain any of the movements and just asked me to copy them blindly without understanding their purpose. I moved on to Boxing but again could not get on with the class.

In 1988, I was lucky enough to find Norwood Taekwon-do and Mr George Daley who in 3 years would guide me to my black belt. Since then I have attained the rank of 5th Degree International Instructor with the ITF. I have trained with General Choi Hong Hi, the Founder of Taekwon-do, and Rhee Ki Ha - the world's greatest living Martial Artist and the first man ever to be promoted to the rank of Grandmaster.

In accordance with the principals of Taekwon-do, I have striven never to be contented with what I have in terms of skills. To this end I have become a master craftsman in joinery, a professional standard musician and an IT systems engineer recognised by Microsoft. I hope to instill in my students the same thirst for knowledge that has driven me and to encourage them to dare to be great.

I have, to date, produced 9 black belt students of whom I am immensely proud."

Richard Walford, III Degree

I started Tae Kwon-do at the age of 18, at Redhill with Mr Stephen Martinez. I knew this would be the martial art for me after my first lesson, and was keen to make this a part of my life. I had previsouly tried a few other martial arts, but they were not for me.

I have now been training for 17 years and during this time I have been fortunate enough to meet General Choi Hong Hi and take all my gradings (with one exception) in front of Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha.

As a member of our school, I have participated in many competitions and have a showcase of 13 trophies - my most memorable one being my first tournemont at the Scottish Championships and winning the gold medal.

I am a 'C Class Instructor', and I am extremely proud to have Mr Martinez as my instructor. Over the years, he has shown me the way and passed on his knowledge, which in turn, I can pass on to others.

Since recently promoting to 3rd degree, I'm currently learning new techniques for my future gradings, promoting the art of Tae Kwon-do and living life to the full.
